April 11, the birthday of James Parkinson, has been designated as Parkinson's disease day. A red tulip was chosen by international organizations as the symbol of the disease in 2005: it represents the James Parkinson Tulip cultivar, registered in 1981 by a Dutch horticulturalist. Advocacy organizations include the National Parkinson Foundation, which has provided more than $172 million in care, research and support services since 1982, Parkinson's Disease Foundation, which has provided more than $96 million for research and $40 million for education and advocacy programs since its founding in 1957 by William Black;[85][86] the American Parkinson Disease Association, founded in 1961; and the European Parkinson's Disease Association, founded in 1992.
